Mary Beth fought mightily in her struggle against lymphoma. However, she was unable to overcome the latest recurrence of this illness. She died surrounded by family and friends.
Mary Beth spent her childhood traveling the world with her parents, the late Delmar Grover Fox and Garnet Marler Fox. Born into an Air Force family in Venice, Florida, she also lived in Louisiana, Kansas, Iowa, Germany, Japan, Hawaii, Maryland, and Virginia. She graduated from Furman University and until her children were born, taught elementary school in Charlotte, Fuquay-Varina and Raleigh. It was in Charlotte that she met the love of her life, Jim Hall. Jim and Mary Beth were married July 27, 1968 in Annandale, Virginia. They soon moved to Raleigh where they have lived since, except for a year and a half in Kingston, New York, and three years in England.
Mary Beth’s life revolved around church, family, and friends. She was a strong Christian who believed firmly in the power of prayer, and in her responsibility to others. She was a devoted daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, and friend. She was an active member of Pullen Memorial Baptist Church and Church Women United. She was a strong advocate for racial justice and believed in standing up for the rights of all people. Among many strong beliefs, she knew that she was loved by many including God, her husband, her children, her grandchildren, and her extended family. She believed that God loves everyone “no matter what.” She believed it was her duty to help others. A lifelong Girl Scout, Mary Beth was a troop leader for over 20 years, after which she continued to be involved in scouting. She nurtured, supported, and mentored many, many young people through Girl Scouts, youth groups, Sunday School, tutoring, and other organizations. She believed in taking care of God’s Creation and loved camping, canoeing, hiking, and walking on the beach. Mary Beth wrote the following some years ago and she lived her life in accord, “All people are created in God’s image and worthy of respect as such.”
Mary Beth is survived by her husband, Jim Hall of Raleigh; children, Jeff Hall and wife, Shannon of Greenville, NC, Karen Sazani of Raleigh; and grandchildren, Benjamin and Graham Hall of Greenville, and Megan Sazani of Raleigh.
A memorial service will be held 2:00 p.m. Saturday, July 27 at Pullen Memorial Baptist Church in Raleigh. She will be cremated and later scattered in the Siler Garden at Pullen.
